In Deep Water

We went to church at Faith Baptist Church in Williamsburg. It is an independent baptist, the Pastor graduated from Bob Jones University so you know it was fundamentally sound and very traditional. When looking on the internet it was the first church to come up in this area and when I went to the web site, I looked first at their missionary list. The first name on that list was Dan and Lyn Sehested, so we had to go there, we had a connection to them already. The pastor had served as an associate with Dan many years ago. Don't remember where, I think it was in South Carolina. We'll have to ask Edel if she knows him. His name is Michael Privett. We enjoyed SS and church but sure miss our services, especially the musical talent we have. I can't wait to hear Jim Hattaway, Alan, Mike or Mistie sing again.

We had lunch at UNO again, I'm trying to get my fill of spinoccoli pizza while it's available. Then we took a drive down to Virginia Beach and on the bridge that crosses the Chesapeake Bay.  I didn't realize until looking at the map while driving down this way earlier in the week, that the state of Virginia is divided by the Chesapeake Bay, there is a narrow strip of land East of the bay that is east Virginia.  Well this bridge is quite impressive. It is 17 miles long and has two tunnels that are a mile long that allow ships to pass through the bay. So, you start out on a bridge above water, travel a few miles then the road goes underwater for a mile, go a few more miles on top then down under again, then back up.  It is one of the top 7 engineering wonders of the world.  Beverly and I were both a little apprehensive about this little trip but since we were so close to this wonder, we had to experience it.  It really wasn't as scary as I thought it might be. There were large cargo ships off into the distance, sailboats and motorboats all around. We crossed the bridge, which is a toll bridge then turned around and came right back.

This is a picture from the bridge, heading for the first tunnel, the bridge is about 15 to 20 feet above the water.

There is a restaurant, gift shop and a pier you can go out on to sight see and fish at the first tunnel entrance. This picture is taken from that area, these are man made islands. What you are seeing is a view from the first island, looking across huge boulders, placed there to hold everything in place, towards open water, which is where the first tunnel is, over to the next section of the bridge. So when we got back into our car we went under water then back up to the bridge on the other side of this opening.

This is a view of the entrance to one of the tunnels.

This is a view of a portion of the bridge from the east end. There is no way to get a shot of the whole bridge including the tunnels, it's just too long. You can Google, Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel and learn more about it, there are even some YouTube videos of it.

Rick got a picture of this little guy from the same beach area you see in the picture above. I think all those wholes in the sand were made by crabs.

No, this isn't me, OU won the game yesterday so Rick didn't pout all evening and I didn't turn into a crab.

Tomorrow we're leaving and planning to drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway, so pray for us as we get on the road again.

If you haven't done so already, check out "The Kirkpatrick's" that's Cassie's blog and there are some cute pics of Wyatt.

Love you,
mk

  1. Wow...I can just imagine taking Russell on that long 17 mile bridge. I can't believe that underwater tunnel didn't bother you. I would have been pretty stressed.
